Some food and fight

28 June 2012, 12:38 Rating: 3 [+]

Started a new adventurer as a dwarf and cut my teeth on a few quests to kill some night creatures. They all seem to have a weakness to copper which luck would have it I discovered a copper pick in an abandoned human fort just outside of the town.
I don't know why but for the life of me I can't find any wild animals to get meat from and I'm into bright yellow hunger. So I see a few local tamed pigs and dogs milling around.
"They wouldn't care if I killed one of the pigs...would they?"

A bronze colossus lick the dust

So, I'm just wandering along through this forest, looking for a cave where I could maybe kill some dragons or something and get their fat loot. This was shortly after I had gotten my throwing to legendary +2 (remember this).
I came across a cave and thought, "Well, maybe it'll be filled with giants or something". Wrong. There was a bronze colossus.

Dwarf Fortress awesomeness

27 June 2012, 09:10 Rating: 3 [+]

Another example of Dwarf Fortress awesomeness. As you can see armor protects against a pike like it should and would in reality. This injury would have required a crutch (which are oddly hard to find in adventure mode) if it penetrated or I didn't have armor there.
Pikes used to be made of wood, or if they weren't they were terrible to use in close combat because of the lack of momentum, due to them being a defensive weapon meant to be used at charging enemies and such. So it makes sense that they're worthless when you have an angry flail wielding dwarf in your face.
And immediately after this I was hit in the head by a whip so hard that my skull caved into my brain, killing me. Get some, lose some. Such is Dwarf Fortress.

Self-destruction

27 June 2012, 09:03 Rating: 2 [+]

Started off well enough. Small Goblin ambush managed to pick off a few of my dwarves, but I got most everyone inside. The goblins wanted to go after the easy pickings, intimidated no doubt by the looming presence of the vast tower of doom above my fortress and the blood-and-vomit-covered walls of the fortress' entrance.
But they finally worked up the courage to ascend the spiral staircase into the fortress. The first maceman to the top inadvertently tripped a pressure plate and stumbled right into a row of cage traps. But it was too late, the floors of the spiral staircase had already retracted from beneath his goblin brethren, sending them hurtling to the ground far below. A lucky few had only just begun their ascent and their fall was short and their injuries quite slight.
